Minister – Rev. Haley Asberry
The Reverend Haley Asberry has been called as Minister for the Wabash Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Reverend Asberry is a 2015 graduate of Christian Theological Seminary with a Master’s in Divinity and a 2011 graduate of Indiana University with a Bachelor of Arts. During her time in seminary, she visited South Africa as part of an extensive two-year study of liberation theology and the Church’s role in the anti-Apartheid movement. Her clinical pastoral study was at Indiana University Health (Riley Children’s Hospital) where she focused on Pastoral Care in Trauma Situations/Death. She has recently served as both Interim and Transitional Minister at the Wabash Christian Church since October 2016. Rev. Asberry and her husband, Tobi Oguntoye, currently reside in Marion.
Reverend Asberry chose to be ordained in the Disciples of Christ denomination because, “As the greater Church denomination, we don’t have creeds and that allows for the beauty of differing opinions and theologies in the pews and even at the Communion table. All are welcome. No one is made to feel unwelcome from fellowship and the love of God because people can come as they are. Since I joined my home church, I have felt the call to serve the Church in a variety of ways. I believe that being a Disciple means that serving is something that is done and not just talked about. Being in covenant with God as a denomination and as individuals gives us the responsibility to be active in and out of the church building: to be the hands and feet of Christ in real and concrete ways. I believe that God’s desire for the world is unity and wholeness and therefore we must be able to be in conversation and collaboration with those who differ from us, we must learn from those we would normally try to avoid and we must realize that we are called to truly love and serve our neighbors without conditions. I think the Church has the potential to help end hunger, homelessness, racism, and help all who reside on the margins for whatever reasons.”
